A father in Georgia was arrested, jailed and charged with theft after he plugged his electric car into an exterior outlet at his son’s school for a quick charge totaling about five cents worth of “juice.” WXIA’s Doug Richards reports.
By Daniella Silva, NBC News
A Georgia man found himself in handcuffs after charging his electric car outside a middle school where his son was playing tennis in what police alleged was unlawful theft of county power worth roughly five cents.
Kaveh Kamooneh, of Decatur, said he was attending a Saturday morning tennis practice session for his 11-year-old son on Nov. 2 when he plugged in his electric car at a power outlet outside Chamblee Middle School.
Kamooneh, 50, said he was alarmed when, soon after, he saw a police officer inspecting his Nissan LEAF.
According to a report from the Chamblee Police Department, an officer responded to a called complaint of the white Nissan LEAF left parked and charging at the school. In the police report, the officer said he could not find the vehicle s owner but found the car doors unlocked and picked up a piece of mail on the car floor showing a Decatur address.
He told me he was going to arrest me for theft, Kamooneh said, who said he charged his car for roughly 20 minutes. Clean Cities Atlanta, an electric vehicle advocacy group, says that is roughly the equivalent of a nickel’s worth of electricity, WIXA in Atlanta reported1.
On Nov. 13, Kamooneh said he was met at his door by police, who handcuffed him and took him to the DeKalb County jail, where he was held for about 15 hours.
I quickly realized it was from the events that had happened 11 days back, he said. The officer did threaten that he would do that. I guess I didn t quite believe that he would go through with it.
Kamooneh was officially charged with theft by taking what the officer said was theft of power by not seeking permission from the DeKalb County School system to charge his car there, according to the police report.
Police said, according to the report, they met with Chamblee Middle School employees, who confirmed that Kamooneh was not authorized to plug his car into any school socket.
Sgt. Ernesto Ford of the of the Chamblee Police Department declined to discuss the incident further with NBC News, but told WXIA that Kamooneh broke the law. He stole something that wasn t his.
A theft is a theft, he added.
But Kamooneh said he believes he committed no crime. He said in his experience as an electric car driver, seeking permission was often an informal exchange and that he had never encountered a problem before.
Of course I agree that theft is theft, what I don t agree with is that every taking of something without permission is theft, he said, adding that there was no one at the school to ask permission from at the time.
The DeKalb County School District said in a statement that it has cooperated with the police investigation and will continue to do so.

Waberer s International Pte.Co., one of Europe s largest road freight companies, has ordered 600 DAF tractors as part of a comprehensive fleet renewal program. At the DAF premises in Eindhoven, the first batch of 250 vehicles was delivered officially to chairman and CEO Gyorgy Waberer by Ron Bonsen, member of the DAF Board of Management and responsible for Marketing & Sales.
2000th DAF truck
Waberer s International operates more than 3,000 of its own trucks, of which more than 30 per cent are DAF vehicles. We have chosen DAF because of the vehicle s reliability, high quality, low maintenance cost and spacious and comfortable cabs, which are of great value within long distance transport , said Gyorgy Waberer. Also the stable resale values of the DAF vehicles were a decisive factor to continue our relationship with DAF. This order will include the 2,000th DAF tractor delivered to us since the first entered service.
Double digit growth
The 600 vehicle order consists of 150 CF trucks for medium distance transport and 450 XF vehicles for long distance haulage, of which one third are the latest Euro 6 models, will be delivered in the first half of 2014. All vehicles are equipped with clean and efficient Euro 5 EEV or Euro 6 engines as well as the latest comfort and safety systems, like the lane departure warning system, illustrating the high importance the company is attaching to the environment and safety. To be successful on the international market we need to offer our customers highest delivery reliability at favorable rates , added Gyorgy Waberer. To ensure the most economical operation as possible, our average fleet age is only 2 years. A young and modern fleet is instrumental to further expand our presence in Western Europe; we expect a double digit growth percentage in sales this year. For one of Europe s leading and most professional transport operators to choose DAF is a great recognition for our company and our dealers , commented Ron Bonsen. It is also a recognition of our successful and long-term relationship. Waberer s is driven by continuous improvement of operational efficiency and we are proud to be the company s largest supplier of tractors.

Mars was driving alone in her 2004 Porsche SUV when for unknown reasons the vehicle crossed the center line and struck an eastbound 2013 Chrysler minivan occupied by six people, according to the Loudoun County Sheriff s Office.
One of those six people, Irene Ellisor of Huntsville, Texas, died at the scene.
Authorities say she was not wearing her seat belt.
Mars, 73, was hospitalized for her injuries and is now recuperating at home, according to her personal spokesman.
This tragedy has left Jacquie filled with sorrow for the loss of life and those who were injured in the accident, said Kent Jarrell, who is not affiliated with Mars, Inc. She would like to express her deepest condolences to the families involved.
The driver of the minivan was transported to a Falls Church hospital, where she was in listed in critical condition on Monday. Her condition on Wednesday was unknown.
The sheriff s office says the remaining passengers all from Texas were all treated and discharged from area hospitals.
The commonwealth s attorney s office is reviewing the matter.
Mars and her two brothers privately own the company started by their grandfather that makes such universal sweet-tooth staples as Snickers, Milky Way, and M&M s.
Today, Mars Inc. is the largest candy company in the world.
Forbes says Jacqueline Mars has a net worth of $20.5 billion, making her the third richest woman in the country and the 15th wealthiest person in the United States.

Babcock aimed to accelerate DAF s heavy-duty vehicle market share from between 1% and 2% currently, to between 8% and 10% within the next four years, Babcock Africa division CEO Roger O Callaghan said on Friday.
Speaking at a press briefing on the sidelines of the Truck and Bus Show, at Nasrec, he said DAF, which focused on delivering a full range of performance-enhancing vehicle solutions under its Advanced Transport Efficiency (ATE) programme, had progressed the development of the right trucks, an efficient and wide net of dealer networks and the right sales and marketing push.
By the end of next year, the group aimed to have established a further 30 dealers, to complement the current 21-strong dealer network, nationwide, with a branch in Cape Town coming on line by the end of this year.
A satisfactory finance option, without which the group s ambitions would likely falter, was currently under development and a proposal would be made public by the end of February.
The ATE programme had mobilised enhancements to the 12.9-litre Paccar MX engine fitted in DAF s XF105 model which resulted in a 3% improvement in fuel consumption, besides others.
Low operating costs, best possible driver satisfaction and high reliability are the key design criteria behind DAF trucks for the long haul, said Babcock Africa director responsible for the DAF business Wilna Steyn, noting the vehicle s driver comfort and the generation of high revenue per kilometre for the operator.
Babcock is the sole importer and distributor of DAF trucks in the Southern African market.
Meanwhile, DAF planned to increase its trucks sales, from the current financial year s forecast of 200 units, to over 300 during the year to March 2015.
DAF did not plan to venture into the entire sub-Saharan Africa region, but would narrow its focus to the Southern African Development Community countries.

How the Government Shutdown Affects Imports and Exports
Government shutdown. It’s happening. It has many effects. If you’re an international shipper, you know government paws have to touch all imports and exports. You know, that little thing called customs1? So how does the government shutdown affect international shipping?
First, a very brief overview of why we’re seeing a government shutdown:
It’s Congress’ job to pass a spending bill to fund the government. Congress can’t seem to do its job because Republicans and Democrats are fighting over The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act2 a.k.a. Obamacare. So we get a government shutdown.
Don’t worry, despite not being able to manage this whole doing their job thing, the men and women who represent us in the House and Senate will still get paid their six figure salaries.
Yes, I am being a bit harsh.
Still, if I ever run for president, my campaign will include paying my position, and probably Congressional positions too, what the average American worker makes (technically, I couldn’t legally change the pay of the president until the next one took over, but refunding most of my wages shouldn’t be a problem since being a multi-millionaire is basically a prerequisite for being President of the United States). Perhaps paying multi-millionaires $400,000 a year while letting them live rent free in a mansion and giving them expense accounts on top is a microcosm of how our government finds itself spending close to $2 billion more a day than it makes.
Sorry. I digress.
Want a larger overview of the government shutdown? You can go to CNN3. Or Google it. Just don’t ask random people on the street since, as this Jimmy Kimmel clip shows, they probably don’t know the difference between The Affordable Care Act and Obamacare… Oh, wait. Still, I’ll bet they’d tell you whether the shutdown is the fault of the Republicans, the Democrats, or Obama.
Now, to the effects the Government Shutdown is having when it comes to importing and exporting goods…
The Government Shutdown has importers and exporters scared.
The mood and outlook of shippers can have a serious impact on the number and size of cargo shipments in the international shipping industry.
A Market Watch blog4 highlights the worries many retailers are having with the government shutdown that caused 6,000 U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) employees to get furloughed at a time when shipments for the holiday season are coming in.
6,000 is a big number, but looks a little smaller when compared to the 58,000 CBP workers you start out with. CBP inspectors are considered “essential staff” so cargo is being processed without major delays from the CBP so far.
If only that were the whole story.
There is plenty of growing potential for delays from the CBP as the shutdown goes on. The longer the shutdown lasts, the more severe the danger of delays grows. But where the real nervousness for shippers comes in is from other government agencies which have a part in clearing cargo.
The Market Watch blog highlights it like this: “…once containers clear the ports, the U.S. Consumer Product and Safety Commission, Food and Drug Administration, Environmental Protection Agency, and United States Department of Agriculture are also required to put their stamp of approval on imported products.”
Chances are good that if your imports or exports have to deal with these agencies or ones like them, you’re feeling the heat of the government shutdown already.
“The U.S. government’s partial shutdown is beginning to gum up trade,” according to The Wall Street Journal.
In an article from The Wall Street Journal it’s reported, “More than 40 government agencies, including the EPA, the Department of Agriculture and the Department of Commerce, are involved in trade shipments, said Ms. Marianne Rowden president of the American Association of Exporters and Importers. Fourteen agencies have ‘release and hold’ authority that trumps clearance from U.S. Customs and Border Patrol, she said.”5
The article goes on to report that many of these government agencies “have pared staffs and closed websites”.
The article features a number of places where the government shutdown has caused problems for U.S. imports and exports including The Bureau of Industry and Security not giving necessary export authorizations, the EPA not clearing pesticides for importation, and USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service not having inspectors available to clear things like wood for exportation.
If your international shipping involves things like metals, wood, drugs, certain electronics, and the many more goods that require special authorization from government agencies other than the CBP, you could be in for serious delays. Those delays will only get worse the longer the government shutdown goes on.
I liked the close of the Wall Street Journal’s article:
Not being able to move a load of lumber because the shutdown has no one available to inspect the wood has caused Mr. Hodges, chairman of Titan Transfer Inc., to conclude that his wood inspection is “nonessential.” But multiply his load by many others and “it’s probably deemed more essential than a lot of people think,” he said. “None of ‘em in Washington have much of a clue about what happens in the Main Streets across the U.S. They live in La-La Land.”
Here in the real world, businesses and people’s jobs depend on international shipping. It is essential to the U.S. economy. During the government shutdown, Universal Cargo Management will do everything possible to make sure your imports and exports still go as smoothly as possible. That’s our job. And I dare say we get it done a whole heck of a lot better than Congress gets national budgets done.
