DOT shuts down another driver after fatal accident

In the second imminent hazard out-of-service order issued to a driver this month, the Department of Transportation s Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has shut down South Carolina-based trucker Arnold Bradford Williams after he was charged with reckless homicide and possessing an open alcohol beverage container.

The charges follow an arrest made after Williams crashed his truck and trailer on I-526 into four stopped vehicles. One person was killed and three were injured.

The imminent hazard order was issued based on the violations of federal regulations that prohibit drivers of trucks to operate under vehicles under the influence of alcohol.

Man killed in Isabella Township after being struck by pickup truck …

BROOMFIELD TOWNSHIP — The Isabella County Sheriff’s Department reports that a man is dead after being struck by a pickup truck last night.

The crash occurred on M-20 just west of Sherman Road just after 10 pm, according to police.

A vehicle was stopped with its hazards on and called 911 due to finding a deer lying dead in the road.

Another vehicle, driven by Jaremy Stiles, age 37 from Big Rapids, stopped behind the first vehicle to see if that driver needed assistance.

Stiles had shut off his vehicle lights when he went to check on the first driver.

While Stiles was returning to his car, a pickup truck approached, saw the deer but not the cars, and swerved to the right to avoid hitting the deer.

When the driver of the pickup truck spotted Stiles, he swerved further to his right and went into a ditch. Stiles, police say, also went into the ditch in what they believe was an attempt to avoid being hit by the pickup truck.

Instead, he ran right into the path of the pickup truck and was struck and killed.

Stiles was pronounced dead at the scene.

Trucking giant YRC traveling carefully in pursuit of Arkansas Best …

YRC Worldwide Inc. ‘s possible revival of a spurned bid for trucker Arkansas Best Corp. is being shaped by lessons from its brush with bankruptcy because of a merger spree, Chief Executive Officer James Welch said.

We ‘ve made a lot of progress over the last 12 to 13 months, Welch told Bloomberg News in an interview. We ‘re in a position of trying to move forward versus just being defensive all the time.

YRC ‘s offer was disclosed Thursday by Arkansas Best, which said its board in April turned down a request to begin talks to sell ABF Freight System Inc., its largest unit. It declined to reveal terms proposed by YRC, which built itself into the biggest U.S. trucker with more than $2 billion in acquisitions last decade. YRC is based in Overland Park

Pursuing Arkansas Best would shift YRC ‘s focus back toward expansion after negotiating credit agreements to avoid bankruptcy in 2011 and 2009. Welch was named CEO in July 2011 after the company ‘s purchases left it in debt, unprofitable and losing customers to Con-Way Inc. and FedEx Corp.

The economy is not great but not bad, valuations are fair and we see enough synergies coming out of a potential acquisition that it gives us confidence we can finance this transaction if it occurred, he said.

Welch acknowledged that some of YRC ‘s acquisitions in the early 2000s were ill-timed and ill-conceived. The company is much stronger financially now, he said. He declined to disclose details of the offer for Arkansas Best.

Arkansas Best hasn ‘t had any contact with YRC since declining the overture, said Kathy Fieweger, vice president for marketing and communications at the Fort Smith, Arkansas-based company. She declined to discuss specifics of the offer.

The trucker is focused on labor negotiations as well as other strategic and operational initiatives that make it inappropriate to consider a YRC offer at this time, the company said in a U.S. regulatory filing.

Arkansas Best has led advances this year among the nine members of the Standard & Poor ‘s Supercomposite Trucking Index, with a total return of 77 percent compared with 17 percent for the group. The index does not include YRC.

Analysts including Art Hatfield of Raymond James & Associates Inc. questioned whether YRC ‘s operations and balance sheet have improved enough to consider an acquisition.

I don ‘t think it ‘s serious at all, Hatfield said yesterday in an interview. YRC ‘s balance sheet couldn ‘t handle more debt, so I don ‘t know what they ‘re thinking in that regard. It just doesn ‘t make any sense.

The trucker has reported six straight annual losses and held long-term debt of $1.3 billion at the end of the first quarter, when it recorded a $24.5 million net loss.

YRC ‘s changes may not warrant taking on a significant acquisition yet, particularly given a 59 percent jump in Arkansas Best shares since it announced a tentative deal with the Teamsters on May 3, Jason Seidl, a Cowen Securities LLC analyst, said in a report.

YRC is assessing its position on whether to approach Arkansas Best again, Welch said. The company isn ‘t interested in making a hostile bid, he said.

YRC ‘s freight operation has 290 facilities across the U.S. and moves 45,000 shipments a day, carrying goods from multiple shippers. ABF Freight has about 275 terminals over mostly the same territory, with about 18,000 daily shipments, Welch said.

Both companies need to improve their density, to fill their trucks better, Welch said. We both have excess capacity. We see a lot of synergies by combining those networks and becoming more efficient.

YRC had a tough time managing the network overlap when it bought Roadway Corp. in 2003, and a similar issue could arise with an Arkansas Best purchase, said Seidl, who has a hold rating on Arkansas Best and YRC. Hatfield rates YRC underperform and Arkansas Best market perform.

Southeast Asia-Australia Shipping Services Merged For Greater …

The flow of Australian exports and Asian imports are set to be affected by the merger of two shipping services linking Southeast Asia and Australia, into a single weekly service.

Southeast Asia Australia Shipping Services Merged For Greater ... trucker truck translogistics southeast singapore ships shipping result malaysia lloyd import hanjin export container asian

Hanjin container ship

Announced in March, the decision was taken in an attempt to streamline shipping services incorporating Australia, Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia. The introduction of larger 3,400-3,600 teu container ships means the number of ships is reduced from 8 to 5.

It is believed that consolidating these overlapping services and deploying fewer but bigger ships increases efficiency without reducing the quality of service to their customers.

The merger, which takes effect in mid-April, sees ASA (Singapore-Australia Service) or AUS (Australia Service for Hanjin Shipping only) combine with SAL (Asia-Australia Container Service), to create a new consolidated service named ASAL (Southeast Asia-Australia Service) or AUS.

The shipping lines involved1 are ANL, Hanjin Shipping, OOCL and RCL, which operate four 1,900 teu box ships covering Jakarta Singapore Brisbane Sydney Melbourne Jakarta, and CSCL, HMM, Hapag-Lloyd and UASC, operating four 2,250 teu box ships rotating Port Klang Singapore Sydney Melbourne Adelaide Port Klang.

The new service will be operated jointly2 by CSCL, Hanjin Shipping, Hapag-Lloyd, RCL, and UASC, with HMM and OOCL participating through slot purchase only.

Sailings will be weekly, serving all of the previous ports in one rotation: Port Klang Singapore Brisbane Sydney Melbourne Adelaide Jakarta Port Klang.

Freight All Kinds

In container shipping, listing items as Freight All Kinds might be a great way to ship multiple gadgets without having to ship just one specific commodity. Many instances we ll see Freight All Kinds as the commodity listed for shipments which were consolidated. This makes sense since there are multiple shipments to consider. Normally the freight rates for Freight All Varieties may be a bit of larger since it s accommodating all kinds of freight, but freight forwarders and consolidators take this into consideration earlier than quoting their worldwide delivery rates to their customers. Since it is at all times considerably lower than the alternative which is less than container load (LCL), clients by no means seem to mind.

In transport Freight All Sorts, the shipper is required to listing the entire commodities on the invoice of lading so that the transport company is conscious of what s being shipped. That is necessary for loading the ship since they need to take into consideration any hazardous materials or different kinds of special goods that might want consideration should there be a problem. That is additionally important for security in the post 11th of September world since transparency is the key to protecting the world protected from terrorists.

Whereas delivery Freight All Kinds may seem to be a catch all type of commodity itemizing, it isn t used as continuously as one would possibly think. It is reserved for the particular circumstances when it truly is transport all types of freight together in one transport container. Because of this, it is a good way for consolidators and freight forwarders to maneuver their shipments rapidly and efficiently by means of the supply chain and still keep inside the rules of the transport companies.

When individuals consider working in the transport business, they have an inclination to consider ports and other people working on the ports like stevedores and ship captains. In actuality although there are various different aspects of transport, together with the elements related to Freight All Varieties shipping. When an organization is beginning to import or export items, they are going to rapidly learn that there are various people involved in transferring their items, particularly for Freight All Kinds. What s the very first thing it is advisable do as soon as you already know your ocean freight cargo is prepared? Discover a steamship line. At this point you ll be able to look on-line for ocean freight rates, which is decided by individuals within the pricing division of the steamship line. And by utilizing Freight All Kinds transport, it can be lots easier.

History shows strong start often leads to making the Chase – SB Nation

What to know who will make the Chase? Just take a look at the current standings and that will provide you the answer.

After five consecutive races to start the year, NASCAR took its first hiatus of the season this past weekend and now enters a 15-race stretch that will not see it break again until late-July.

From short tracks like Martinsville and Richmond, to intermediate ovals like Charlotte and Michigan, to superspeedways like Talladega and Daytona to the twisty Sonoma road course, the upcoming gauntlet of races will test teams on every kind of track included on the Sprint Cup Series schedule.

This 15-week run will also go a long way to dictating who makes the Chase and who doesn’t.

But even with only five races in the books, we already have a good indication of which drivers will be racing for the championship when the Chase begins Sept. 15 at Chicagoland Speedway.

Since the implementation of the Wild Card system, how the standings look after five events is pretty similar to how it will look five months from now.

In both 2011 and 2012, nine of the top 12 drivers in points after five races went on to qualify for the Chase. This is a testament to how critical it is for a driver to start the year off strong, establishing a cushion where a couple of bad races in the summer months won’t be a dramatic blow to one’s Chase hopes.

“Nobody runs the whole season perfectly,” said series points leader Dale Earnhardt Jr. at Fontana. “I’m just trying to get as many points as we can as early as we can so when that bad luck comes, it doesn’t hit us as hard as it hits some of these guys early.

“These guys that run so well and then have something silly happen to their car or whatever and get in a hole early; they really have to grind and it weighs on you trying to make that up and get back into a comfortable position in the points.”

As the only driver to finish in the top 10 in every race so far, Earnhardt finds himself atop the Cup standings by 18 markers and is in excellent position to secure a Chase berth for the third consecutive season.

And if you’re looking at the other drivers making up the top 12 in points, it’s easy to think that Brad Keselowski, Kyle Busch, Matt Kenseth, Kasey Kahne, Jimmie Johnson, Carl Edwards and Greg Biffle all will join Earnhardt as Chase participants.

But what about Paul Menard, Joey Logano and Ricky Stenhouse Jr., who find themselves eighth, ninth and 12th? The jury is still out, as none of the trio has ever been a Chase participant.

And of course there are a host of big names lurking in the shadows, including Tony Stewart, Jeff Gordon and Kevin Harvick, all of whom have been Chase regulars but are facing an uphill battle to qualify.

For Stewart, this is an unusual occurrence.

Residing 22nd in the standings, never before has the owner/driver been this low in points after five races and there is doubt whether he can make the Chase for the ninth time in 10 years.

As for Gordon, this year has an all too familiar feel to it, as he again is off to a slow start, and with the exception of Bristol, has struggled to find a handle on NASCAR’s new Gen-6 car.

Although he has just one top 10 thus far, the good news for Gordon, 18th in the standings, is he is still in a better position than he was a year ago at this time when he was buried back in 25th.

“We’ve got ourselves in a hole that we’re going to have to climb ourselves out of,” Gordon said at Fontana. “We can certainly do it again, but it’s not something you want to do.

“We definitely focused coming into this season on, even if we’re off a little bit, let’s get some consistent finishes so we’re staying up in the points and don’t get too far behind and here we are in a similar situation.”

However, while starting strong does make things easier later, it isn’t necessarily vital to make the Chase. No driver demonstrates this better than Keselowski, the defending Cup champion.

In ’11, Keselowski was 23rd after five races and it took a scorching performance in the summer that included three victories for him to race his way into the Chase for the first time.

While he began the ’12 season slightly better with a win at Bristol, Keselowski struggled with consistency early on. Heading into Martinsville the eventual champ sat 16th overall and look nothing like the driver who would go on to post an average finish of 6.3 in the Chase.

More often than not, however, the first five races set the tone for the remainder of the year. This underscores the importance of accumulating as many points as possible from the onset.

“Everybody wants to be in the Chase, it’s so important to be in the Chase,” Earnhardt said. “So much publicity for your team and so much excitement to be able to race for the championship. Trying to build on the points early is important to me.”

Should I Insure My Shipment? | Import Export Sea Air Freight LCL …

It is always recommended that you insure your shipment(s), but the reality is that you need to consider the value of the goods, the cost of insurance, the risk involved, and any excess charges or restrictions that might apply.

If you are a business, and you are doing multiple transactions, then you should discuss this with your insurance broker who provides your other business insurance and check if your import or export transactions are included as well.

Failing that, you can get an individual policy for each shipment; but this will always work out more expensive than if your shipments are just part of your annual business insurance, or you have taken out an annual policy to cover your shipping.

For import shipments, you are responsible for insuring your shipments if they are ex works (EXW), FOB or CNF. If the shipment is CIF, then you should ask for your supplier to send you a copy of the insurance policy that covers each shipment.

For export consignments, theoretically the reverse is true. But, just consider your exposure.

A friend of mine is exporting containers on an FOB basis; so theoretically his customer is arranging for insurance on the goods. But once, one of his containers arrived at the destination, and the consignee rejected the goods (for whatever reason); so, the exporter was stuck with a container load of product (that he had already paid for) in another country, for which he then had to try to find another buyer (at a hugely discounted price) or have the cargo destroyed at his expense. So, even though the importer was technically responsible for insuring the goods, the end result is that by him not doing so, it cost him a small fortune. All of which could easily have been avoided had he insured the goods in the first place. Now, regardless of the terms of sale, this exporter insures all of his shipments.

Insurance of personal effects is something that comes up regularly. If you pack the cartons or container yourself, then you will only be able to insure your goods for total loss. Breakage or damage or theft will never be included in this case. International removalist companies may offer this as an option if you were to utilise their services on a door to door basis, but you should check.
