Ban on trucking hazardous materials across Ambassador Bridge …

DETROIT — The Michigan Department of Transportation has recommended lifting a ban on trucking hazardous materials across the Ambassador Bridge that connects the U.S. and Canada, and the idea has prompted concerns on both sides of the border.

The agency is taking public input on the idea until May 27 and any changes likely could take a year before taking effect, The Detroit News reported.

Explosives, radioactive material, flammable liquids and corrosive material currently are banned from the bridge connecting Detroit and Windsor, Ont. They’re also banned from the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel. A ferry service currently operates on the Detroit River for trucks carrying hazardous materials.

The state’s review of the issue came after a request from the Detroit International Bridge Co., which owns the Ambassador Bridge. A public meeting was held on the request on March 22, and MDOT said 10 Canadian officials were among those on hand.

“There’s not enough detail or consultation that has to be in a report of this magnitude,” said Mario Sonego, chief engineer for Windsor.

Plans are in the works to build a new Canadian-financed bridge across the river at Detroit, and that bridge is expected to be open to trucks carrying hazardous material. Gregg Ward, who has owned the Detroit-Windsor Truck Ferry since 1990, opposes ending the ban at the Ambassador Bridge.

“It goes counter to the reasoning about why we need a new bridge, which is redundancy,” he said. “We can’t rely on one bridge. Now, when something happens there are huge backups on the bridge.”

In a study released Dec. 27, MDOT supported the idea of transporting flammable gas/liquids, flammable solids and reactants, oxidants and peroxides, poisonous materials and infectious substances, corrosive materials and other dangerous products across the Ambassador Bridge.

“This issue has been out there for quite a while and it’s definitely not a done deal at this point,” said MDOT spokesman Jeff Cranson.

MDOT didn’t recommend lifting the ban on explosives and radioactive material on the bridge.

Hazardous materials are allowed across the Blue Water Bridge between Port Huron and Sarnia, Ont., and are restricted to designated lanes. Following MDOT’s review, there are no plans to consider allowing trucks hauling hazardous materials in the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel.

Tuna salad tames the savage beast | Overdrive – Owner Operators …

Tuna salad tames the savage beast | Overdrive Owner Operators ... wombat vibe strays snakes reservation load import export ducks dogs cracker crab

El Chupacabra

We are a family with animals. We ve always had dogs and cats, and when the kids were little we had pet rats, a couple of birds, a hermit crab, and scores of fish. I m a big fan of kids having pets it teaches them responsibility and how to love something. And yes, rats are very nice pets they re smart and clean and don t bite. Unlike hamsters, who will chew your face off if given the chance.

Our kids are older now. We haven t had any exotic pets in a long time. The poor dogs are both so elderly they can t travel with us and the cats are evil and can t be trusted in a confined area. I keep throwing ideas out for a truck pet, something to keep George company when I m not with him.

I ve seen people with everything from dogs to ducks in the cab. I ve seen cats, birds, snakes and rabbits. I have not seen a monkey or a wombat, but I m certain there is someone out there traveling with one or both.

I keep my eyes peeled for a pet while we re on the road. Some of the best dogs I ve ever had were strays, and it would be appropriate to find the truck dog on the road.

George stopped at a place on the Navajo reservation in Arizona to stretch his legs and use the bathroom. I was in the back writing, and said I would meet him in a few minutes.

I finished up, started to get out and noticed a really mean-looking dog standing right beside the truck. I hesitated to open the door, then remembered I had five packages of vile tuna salad remaining in the food cabinet1. I grabbed one and a few graham crackers and jumped out, ready to make new friends and avoid a pesky mauling.

The mean-looking dog stood his ground. He didn t make any noise but didn t wag his tail, either. I wasn t getting a good vibe, so I did the most logical thing I could think to do and opened the tuna salad. As I was attempting to scoop the viscous crud out of the package with a graham cracker, a streak of fur whizzed by and took the whole package out of my hands. The mean dog had completely lost interest, but a wiry little puppy was totally interested and came out of nowhere to dine and dash. And then another one, and another and another, until I was being dragged to the ground by dingo puppies for graham crackers.

Of course George chose this very moment to walk out.

Babe? You OK over there?

Help! The dingos are eating my shorts!

Why are you in the middle of a pack of wild dogs with graham crackers?

I thought one of them might make a good truck dog! Help me get this little bastard off my leg! His teeth are caught in my sock!

This is the kind of stuff I m talking about. You have absolutely no regard for your safety when it comes to real things like wild dogs, but you won t pee outside after dark because of El Chupacabra. How does that make any sense?

Can we discuss my startling lack of judgment when I m NOT in danger of losing appendages? That would be great. Help me!

I realized I was talking to his back, and truly thought he had finally had it and was leaving me in a pack of wild dingos when he started getting into the truck. Then he blew the air horn and every single dog for a three mile radius ran and hid.

Well, gah. If you d just do that when El Chupacabra comes to eat our faces off, we ll survive after all.

Team Joella: Trucking along

Well, we ve made it 3 weeks as dog parents and so far we re doing pretty well. Sabrina still has the occasional accident in the house, but for the most part she does a good job. She is learning not to chew on everything and hasn t yet nipped at Ella, which is amazing. She still isn t much of a barker. She only barks when she wants our attention (like if we ve left her outside longer than she feels is necessary, or if she thinks it s time for us to get out of bed and we re still sound asleep) or when she s around other dogs. Other than that she s pretty quiet. All in all, Sabrina is a great addition to our family. Joe and I are amazed at how a little 11 pound ball of fur just has a way of making everything better. As crazy as it sounds, in a lot of ways she makes me feel like our family is complete (of course on the other hand she also makes me want another baby then she wakes us up at 2 am to go outside and I m glad we re out of that phase of life). Ella loves having a dog and Joe and I think it has been really good for her. She takes a lot of responsibility with feeding Sabrina, and will discipline her if necessary. Most of all, it s shown Ella that the world doesn t revolve around her. It has been good for Joe and I to have someone else to tend to when Ella thinks we need to drop everything and help her. It has also been a great distraction during bath time. Sabrina spends the entire bath just sitting on the floor of the bathroom and if Ella starts crying she ll go over and lick her fingers. It s really sweet. Ella continues to be the awesome kid that she is. She s reading really well and only needs help on the big words. During church she even tries to read the bulletin. The only problem with that is that she hasn t yet mastered the art of reading silently. She still loves kindergarten and all that it has to offer. Today I have her second Parent/Teacher conference. While I m confident that Ella is doing great and the teacher will have nothing but nice things to say about her, it s hard not to be a little nervous. Today marks the 100th day of school for this year, so they are having a little celebration in class. Ella has to bring 100 items to show her friends, so she chose to take 100 paper clips. Ella has also prepared all of the Valentines to take her friends at school. The school has pretty strict rules about not allowing candy into class rooms, so we opted for pencils. Ella chose each one specifically for her friends, so I know they will enjoy them. That s really about it here in the Murray house. Other than a horrible cold that we ve been passing around, there isn t too much happening. I’ll be sure to let you know if anything exciting happens.

Trucking Beagles are Retired .Living a life of adventure at home …

When I was trucking around Canada and the United States loneliness sets in through out the day. We all have jobs that we see different sites, people, animals and events, but at the end of the day if you are far away from home it s tough. Buying my tri-color beagle reflecting back made life on the road bearable, filling a void while also adding protection against intruders. Baby toolbox has flown with me, trucked with me, fished, swam, and enjoyed lots of things other dogs would be jealous of. She had two great litter of pups all adopted before birth. Ruby Red her daughter, came back to us 1 1/2 years old for life changes at her home. We became the trucking team and life down the road became fun, energetic, lots of photos and places to explore. The last 10 years with Baby and her daughter are amazing, and will be published. I hope every family who has pets knows they are our family in so many ways. To love, cherish and protect for we are their life line and in return they love us unconditionally.

HM Government proposes something with which I agree – blog*spot

From The Metro1:

Owners of dangerous dogs which attack members of the public will receive tougher penalties. This could include up to 18 months in prison, as the government sets out new guidelines to clamp down on irresponsible animal owners…

Good stuff.

It strikes me that there’s no reason why dog owners are not vicariously liable for absolutely everything their dogs do: if the dog bites someone, the owner should be charged and sentenced as if he had bitten that person; if the dog behaves in such a manner as to make people scared for their safety, the owner should be charged with assault; if a dog kills someone, the owner should be tried for murder, and so on. This saves us the faff of deciding which breeds of dogs are inherently “dangerous” or not (itself a nonsensical exercise as all dogs are the same species).

It’s no different to treating somebody’s car as an extension of the owner/driver, if you knock somebody down, there’s not much point pleading that it wasn’t you, it was the car etc.

Food Truck Fest, Live Music Thursday in Evanston – Evanston, IL Patch

Looking for something to do on Thursday night? You won’t want to miss out on this week’s free concert series in Evanston, when five local food trucks join the music in Brummel Park1.

Evanston’s own Hummingbird Kitchen2, three trucks offering Mexican fare and a cupcake truck will pull up to the park starting at 5:30 p.m. Live music by R&B legend Andre Williams and the Gold Stars runs from 7:30 to 9 p.m.

Williams is playing as part of the city’s free Starlight Concert Series, a lineup of live music in parks around Evanston on Tuesdays and Thursdays through Aug. 21. A complete schedule of acts and locations can be found on the city website3.

“I encourage you to get there early,” said Ald. Anne Rainey, who represents the eighth ward, where Brummel Park is located. “Bring your candles, your chairs, your dogs, your kids and cash, because the food trucks only take cash.”

Want to find out what the food trucks are serving? Click on the link to visit each truck’s website and check out its menu.
