SHIPPING OVERSEAS TO YOUR NEW CUSTOMER ON AN OPEN ACCOUNT CAN BE AN EXPENSIVE MISTAKE.
When spending numerous hours marketing your products & developing a rapport with an overseas prospective customer as value only if you conclude safely the transaction.
We experienced as a freight forwarder in California, shippers that used our freight services on a collect basis that had not sold their shipments on a prepaid basis. This prospect can have a change of heart & simply no longer respond.
Meanwhile the container sits at the destination port & after the first few free storage days, a daily demurrage fee is tagged onto the freight amount. The shipper becomes liable to pay for the storage & faced with either locating a new viable importer & finalize a transaction that has become rather chaotic since no access of the product is available at the port and time and the tab keeps running. Often the products may be sold for a lot less after the steam line & agent are paid in full. Also, the shipper can retrieve the cargo if shipped back paying for the export, the return & any additional storage fee owed at the destination port. We have seen shippers abandoning their shipments, but still remaining liable for their freight, storage bills.
Shippers, first investigate the viability of a buyer, secure a partial payment up-front or a pre-payment prior to shipping. Lastly, use a freight network that you trust pre-paying the freight, which will do more than just selling you a freight rate.
ETC International Freight System is licensed, bonded, Incorporated since 1984. We often trouble shoot and offer our 30 years experience dealing with exporters & importers. We assist shippers with preparing & negotiating letter of credit, involve our freight network to check on the buyers’ status. Feel free to contact us for a conversation regarding your next export or import. Call us at 1-800-383-3157 or email us at email@example.com

And Now Some of Wikipedia Information (many of you readers have asked for some pertinent info, which we on & off are happy to bring to your attention)
Container Ships are cargo ships3 that carry all of their load in truck-sizeintermodal containers4,
in a technique called containerization5. They are a common means of commercial intermodal
freight transport6 and now carry most seagoing non-bulk cargo.
There are two main types of dry cargo: bulk cargo and break bulk cargo. Bulk cargoes, like grain or coal, are transported unpackaged in the hull of the ship, generally in large
volume.3 Break-bulk cargoes, on the other hand, are transported in packages, and are generally manufactured goods.4 Before the advent of containerization in the 1950s, break-bulk items were loaded, lashed, unlashed and unloaded from the ship one piece at a time. However, by grouping cargo into containers, 1,000 to 3,000 cubic feet (28 to 85 m3) of cargo, or up to about 64,000 pounds (29,000 kg), is moved at once and each container is secured to the ship once in a standardized way.5 Containerization has increased the efficiency of moving traditional break-bulk cargoes significantly, reducing shipping time by 84% and costs by 35%.6 As of 2001, more than 90% of world trade in non-bulk goods is transported in ISO containers.7 In 2009, almost one quarter of the world’s dry cargo was shipped by container, an estimated 125 million TEU or 1.19 billion metric tons worth of cargo.81011
The earliest container ships were converted tankers, built up from surplus T2 tankers after World War II. In 1951, the first purpose-built container vessels began operating in Denmark, and between Seattle and Alaska. The first commercially successful container ship was the Ideal X17,9 a T2 tanker, owned by Malcom McLean, which carried 58 metal containers between Newark, New Jersey and Houston, Texas on its first voyage.10 In 1955, McLean built his company, McLean Trucking into one of United States’ biggest freighter fleets. In 1955, he purchased the small Pan Atlantic Steamship Company from Waterman Steamship and
adapted its ships to carry cargo in large uniform metal containers.11 On April 26, 1956, the first of these rebuilt container vessels, theIdeal X, left the Port Newark in New Jersey and a new revolution in modern shipping resulted.121312131415161819202122
The earliest container ships were converted T2 tankers23 in the 1940s after World War II24.Container vessels eliminate the individual hatches, holds and dividers of the traditional general cargo vessels. The hull of a typical container ship is a huge warehouse divided into cells by vertical guide rails. These cells are designed to hold cargo in pre-packed units
containers. Shipping containers are usually made of steel, but other materialslike aluminum, fiberglass or plywood are also used. They are designed to be entirely transferred to and from trains, trucks or trailers. There are several types of containers and they are categorized according to their size and functions. Today, approximately 90% of non-bulk cargo25 worldwide is transported by container, and modern container ships can carry up to 16,020 twenty-foot
equivalent units26 (TEU) (CMA CGM Marco Polo27). As a class, container ships now rival crude oil tankers28 and bulk carriers29 as the largest commercial vessels on the ocean. Although containerization caused a revolution in the world of shipping, its introduction did not have an easy passage. Ports, railway (railroad in the US) companies, and shippers were concerned about the huge costs of developing the ports and railway infrastructure needed to handle
container ships, and for the movement of containers on land by rail and road. Trade unions were concerned about massive job loss among port and dock workers at ports, as containers were sure to eliminate several manual jobs of cargo handling at ports. It took ten years of legal battles before container ships would be pressed into international service. In 1966, a container liner service from USA to the Dutch city of Rotterdam commenced. Containerization changed not only the face of shipping, but it also revolutionized world trade as well. A
container ship can be loaded and unloaded in a few hours compared to days in a traditional cargo vessel. This, besides cutting labor costs, has reducedshipping times between points to a great extent; for example, it takes a few weeks instead of months for a consignment to be delivered from India to Europe and vice-versa. It has also resulted in less breakage due to less handling; also, there is less danger of cargo shifting during a voyage. As containers are
sealed and only open at the destination, pilferage and theft levels have been
Containerization has lowered shipping expense and decreased shipping time, and this has in turn helped the growth of international trade. Cargo that once arrived in cartons, crates, bales, barrels or bags now comes in factory sealed containers, with no indication to the human
eye of their contents, except for a product code that machines can scan and computers trace. This system of tracking has been so exact that a two-week voyage can be timed for arrival with an accuracy of under fifteen minutes. It has resulted in such revolutions as on time guaranteed delivery30 and just in time manufacturing31. Raw materials arrive from factories in sealed containers less than an hour before they are required in manufacture, resulting
in reduced inventory expense.

If you know the basics of how to start an import export business, you should endeavor engage in such trade because it is highly lucrative and profitable. Though it is very competitive business, it is not complicated. The import export business simply involves buying and selling of both foreign and domestic goods for a profit. The import business is one I have had a taste of; having played alongside my dad in the importation of sanitary wares and men s wear; I can boldly tell you that importation is a money-making venture.
Why You Should Start your Own Import Export Business
It is a well known fact today that China is the manufacturing hub of the world, while countries such as USA, Nigeria, UK, etc imports massively to supply the need of the population. Using Nigeria as a case study, it has been established that the local industries cannot meet the demand of consumers; thus the need to import goods other countries to complement local production.
In retrospect, Nigeria also have an abundance of mineral and natural resources; waiting to be exported. In fact, the importation of goods has never been easier than now; due to the emergence of the internet. Importers can now meet manufacturers online, while exporters can also push their products out using the internet as leverage to find buyers. So if you are ready to tap into this golden opportunity, then read on as I provide you with tips on how to start an import export business online from the comfort of your home.
Why do you want to go into importation or exportation? Are you prepared for the risk involved? Are you prepared to hassle with your manufacturers, agents, freight companies, customs, etc? In fact, are you prepared for the stress of importing and exporting? Are you going to focus on importing or exporting? Do you have the needed entrepreneurial skills to succeed? How are you going to raise fund for the venture? These are questions you need to answer before deciding if the business is for you.
Acquire the basic knowledge
After you have made your decision, the next thing to do is to acquire the basic knowledge needed to succeed in this business. This is where you have to inquire about the intricacies of running an import or export business. You should be knowledgeable about negotiating and selling as these are two important factors in import and export.
Define your market and select target product
One of the most important factors you must consider before even pondering on how to start an import export business is to select the target goods. This is where the need for feasibility study comes in .You must know what present imported goods are patronized in America or whatever your country may be. You also need to ascertain the hottest products in demand both locally and internationally.
Should you wish to transact with a certain country, you should know the items selling well there and know your target clients of those goods prior to buying them. I also want to point out that you don t need to have all the money in the world to venture into importing and exporting; you can start this business at home with minimal capital by becoming a product sourcing agent. This way, you merely act as a middleman between manufacturers and their clients. This endeavor also does not necessitate you to buy any inventory.
Find a manufacturer or buyer you can do business with
If you are going to import, then you need to find a manufacturer but if you intend exporting, then you need to find buyers. Sometimes, you can find buyers and manufacturers on the same platform. A good example of such a platform is Alibaba.com.
If you really want to succeed in the import export business, then you definitely need a business plan. Aside helping you formulate a strategy, a plan will also help minimize your mistakes and prove to your financiers or investors that you have done your calculations well. In fact, no bank will finance your transaction without a business plan.
Incorporate your business
You can start importing or exporting goods as an individual from the comfort of your home. But if you want to get the support of your bank, and boost your image or credibility; then you need to incorporate a business. This will portray you as a serious business man or entrepreneur.
Build relationship with those in connected to your line of business
Have a good relationship with different business establishment in different countries. You can communicate with family, friends and business partners in those places. Contact the U.S. embassies, Chamber of commerce, business directories and trade associations in those places so that you would gather information regarding foreign distributors and manufacturers. You will be given a list of manufacturers and industries that can help you start an import export business. Always communicate with the consulate in these countries as preparation for importing.
Get the necessary license and clearance
Contact your taxation bureau in your country and get a registration number from them. Know what the requirements for a license are to manage such business in your own land. You also need to check with the custom agency and Chamber of commerce to ensure that trade barriers and embargoes are not present in the countries you wish to do business with.
You need to raise cash for your import export venture, unless you intend being a sourcing agent. You can raise money from investors or family and friends. You can also obtain a credit letter from your bank for trading in foreign countries. This will minimize your risk of trading, as banks will protect the goods prior to exchanging money.
Seal the deal and import/export the goods
If you are an importer, you must seal the deal before your goods will be shipped to you. If you are an exporter, you must agree with the buyer and provide the goods upon receiving the money.
Another important thing to remember when starting an import export business is to begin a mailing campaign so that you can market your business to your foreign contacts. Tell them about the advantage of selecting your firm if they choose you to be their import-export agent. You can inquire from your contacts in those countries, the names and corresponding addresses of companies that would like to sell their goods in America, Nigeria or wherever you are situated.
After you have obtained names of potential clients, speak to them regarding marketing their products. Tell them about trade shows you wish to join as well as your meetings with distributors and sales representatives. Your clients would therefore build their confidence and trust in your import export company.
Grow your import export business
In conclusion, you need to consider the commission you will get from the manufacturers; that s if you decide to start as an agent. This will however depend on your sales. Make sure to write agreements regarding your commission. As an agent, you can ask for a 10% commission fee from a product s sales price.
Another important factor to starting an import export business is to sign agreements that you have established with the manufacturers. You must make sure that the company you choose is legitimate and reputable. You can tell your lawyer to make a contract regarding this matter.

A very useful article from Mike Poverello regarding customs regulations and requirements in South Africa..
As of May 10 2013 an amendment to the South African Customs and Excise Act (91/1964) published in Government Gazette 364331, concerns an increase to the threshold for importation and exportation in the absence of customs registration.
General Registration Code 70707070 may be used by a party that is not registered as an importer or exporter with the South African Revenue Service2, but wishes to import or export goods, provided that the following requirements are met:
- The goods have a value of less than R 50,000 per consignment, subject to a limitation of three such consignments per calendar year;
- The goods are declared for home consumption (ie, consumption or use in South Africa) or temporary import or export;
- The importer or exporter is a natural person located in South Africa; and
- The importer or exporter states its identity number or taxpayer reference number on the customs declaration form.
Traders should not confuse the above with the withdrawal of the General Registration Code from use by importers and exporters at land borders, which occurred during the course of 2012. In this regard refer to Rule Amendment Government Gazette No. 351783

The return of Mumbai to Virgin Atlantic Cargo s global flight network will give exporters and importers in India another choice for fast, same day trade connections with the United States.
The airline starts daily Airbus A330 passenger and cargo flights between Mumbai and London Heathrow on October 29th 2012 and has already seen the offer of strong support from customers to and from India, particularly for connections to its major U.S. gateways.
John Lloyd, Director of Cargo at Virgin Atlantic, said: On all of the routes we serve, we give freight forwarders and shippers in that market another choice to reach destinations all over the world. Mumbai is a thriving commercial centre and has a consistently strong exchange of trade with the UK but we are also seeing a high level of interest for transhipment traffic over London to our destinations in the U.S. The timing of our schedules means we can offer very competitive same day and next day services for shipments from India to the U.S.
Fast transfers in London mean exports leaving Mumbai on Virgin Atlantic s daily 03.10 (local time) flights arrive the same day in New York JFK by 16.50, Los Angeles by 18.55 and Newark by 19.05. Virgin Atlantic also offers customers in India next day deliveries to other destinations in the U.S.
The new Mumbai service is in addition to the airline s daily flights from New Delhi to London, one of Virgin Atlantic s top performing cargo routes over the last 12 years. Customers in India can access the full Virgin Atlantic network which covers 350 destinations worldwide. Virgin Atlantic Cargo has extended its GSA agreement with InterGlobe in Delhi to also cover Mumbai.
By doubling its cargo capacity to and from India, the airline also hopes to make a significant contribution towards the UK Government s ambition of doubling trade and investment with India by 2015. The UK s biggest exports to India include precious metals and jewellery as well as power generation and general industrial equipment. Apparel and clothing accessories are the UK s biggest import commodity from India, worth some 1.1 billion a year.
Flights from London Heathrow Airport will depart every day at 10.15 GMT arriving into Mumbai at 00.55+1 (local time). The flights from Mumbai will arrive into London Heathrow at 07.55 (GMT).
