Indianapolis Ed Carpenter turned Pole Day into a family celebration.
The stepson of IndyCar founder Tony George became the first member of the Hulman family to win the biggest pre-race event in the series the Indianapolis 500 pole.
Carpenter produced a stunning finish to a day that was rife with suspense. His four-lap average of 228.762 mph was quick enough to break up what appeared to be a Team Penske-Andretti Autosport lock on the front three rows.
Somehow, Carpenter, who owns his team, beat out the big-name guys.
“To be a single-car team in this Chevy shootout, I am going to call it fighting with the Penske and Andretti guys,” said Carpenter, whose pit crew carried him off pit road on their shoulders after an agonizing wait to see if his time would hold up.
The soft-spoken Carpenter grew up around the world-famous 2.5-mile Brickyard, dreaming of the moment he could stand in Victory Lane. Perhaps that will happen May 26.
For now, Carpenter will savor the highest-profile achievement of his career and during a month in which he has strengthened his area ties. His sponsor, golfer Fuzzy Zoeller s Fuzzy s Vodka, is based in Indiana and this week Carpenter added decals to his car from his alma mater, Butler University.
After producing the fastest lap in the opening practice session last Saturday, Carpenter gave away his tickets to watch the Eastern Conference semifinals between the hometown Pacers and New York Knicks so he could spend some time with his wife before another working Mother s Day.
“I felt like, coming in, that we had a chance to be on the pole,” Carpenter said. “To sit on the pole for this race is really a dream come true, and I hope it is a start to what has already been a great month of May. The car has been great and I can t thank my team enough. The sponsors, a lot of great people helped us get here. This is just the first part of what we are here to do.”

ISLAMABAD:
The government has decided to pay a subsidy of Rs1.75 on every kilogramme of sugar. The decision was taken by the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) of the Cabinet on Wednesday, which approved inland freight subsidy of Rs1.75 per kg for the export of 1.2 million tons of sugar.
The ECC met under the chairmanship of Federal Finance and Economic Affairs Minister Saleem Mandviwalla.
The move came in the wake of slow pace of sugar export and keeping in view the industry s liquidity position that causes delay in paying dues to farmers.
It was the second favour given to the influential sugar lobby in just a couple of months, as the government has already provided Rs8 billion in tax relief by lowering federal excise duty to 0.5%.
The ECC also exempted all foreign and local loans for the Karachi Circular Railway project from general sales tax, customs duty and other federal levies to ensure financial viability of the project.
To facilitate and accelerate the project, the Ministry of Railways had moved a summary for waiving general sales tax and customs duty on loans for the project.

The KCR is a mega project of national importance and will provide modern rail-based commuter service for the citizens of Karachi at a cost of $2.6 billion. The ECC was told that Japan International Cooperation Agency would provide $2.4 billion on 0.2% markup payable in 40 years, including a 10-year grace period.
The ECC approved a summary of the Finance Division for equity investment in Democratic Republic of Congo. The State Bank of Pakistan evaluated the proposal and recommended that Lucky Cement may be allowed to remit $40 million on account of equity investment in connection with establishment of a cement manufacturing plant through a joint venture company. The State Bank set a condition, saying the company would arrange foreign exchange from the open market and the outflow would be coordinated with the central bank.
In order to provide fiscal relief and rehabilitate the economic life in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, Fata and Pata, the ECC agreed that the areas of Hub and Hattar may be included in the tax amnesty scheme being offered to ghee manufacturers and exporters based in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan. This summary was sent for approval by the Federal Board of Revenue.
The ECC endorsed the Framework for Power Cogeneration 2013 (Bagasse/Biomass) for inclusion in the Renewable Energy Policy 2006. This framework will be for all high-pressure cogeneration projects utilising bagasse and biomass.
The Renewable Energy Policy 2006 was also extended for five years. A summary recommending this was moved by the Ministry of Water and Power.

The RHA s Board of Directors recently confirmed a new five-year strategy for the Association. We will focus on three priorities for the industry: profitability, compliance and sustainability and we make no apology for putting profit first.
We know that our members are in business to make a profit, and we will be working very hard during 2013 to support companies in that aim. As part of that work, our Board recently decided to cancel the membership of any business that reaches a formal agreement with its creditors and to look extremely closely at their trading patterns in the months or even years prior to the agreement before accepting any application to have the membership re-instated. The issue of phoenix companies has long been a thorn in the side of the industry, and that is why the RHA will be discussing the performance of directors of insolvent companies with the Senior Traffic Commissioner as the year develops.
Compliance remains a key issue, and the UK should be rightly proud of the generally good safety record that British-operated trucks have demonstrated over the years. Our view is very simple: as long as there are those who deliberately or repeatedly flout the law, the attention of the enforcer (VOSA) and the regulator (the Traffic Commissioners) should be focussed on the non-compliant, leaving those operators who put a great deal of effort into getting it right to go about their business without being distracted. Needless to say, our industry and our operations are technically complex, so occasional contraventions may occur, but it should not be difficult for a reputable firm to demonstrate simply and quickly a culture of compliance that will be acceptable to both VOSA and the TCs.
Sustainability is high on the government s agenda and therefore is important to the industry, but we have a good track record of managing carbon dioxide output even though we talk in terms of fuel consumption. Our priority for 2013 is to show the legislators this is our way of tackling the issue, even if it doesn t fit with their language.
I hope that everyone has the dates 10-12 April in their diaries for a trip to the Commercial Vehicle Show at the NEC in Birmingham. An excellent event is expected, with wide-ranging representation from all aspects of the industry and, at the time of writing, we have over 350 exhibitors who have taken space.
The Euro 5 versus Euro 6 argument will no doubt be high on many people s agenda; and operators will be deep in conversation with manufacturers about lead times, fuel consumption and, of course, prices. We are also delighted to see trailer manufacturers well represented at this year s show and there is bound to be interest in progress with the longer semi-trailer trial. Last year s show saw a few of the first examples, so this year we will be able to compare notes and experience.

Wednesday evening, NASCAR announced that Jeremy Clements, the owner and driver of the No. 51 Chevrolet in the Nationwide Series, has been suspended indefinitely from the Nationwide Series. This suspension is due to a violation of NASCAR s Code of Conduct that occurred on Saturday at Daytona International Speedway.
NASCAR Senior Vice President of Racing Operations Steve O Donnell was quite terse when asked about it.
During the course of an interview, Jeremy Clements made an intolerable and insensitive remark, O Donnell said. NASCAR has a Code of Conduct that s explicitly spelled out in the 2013 NASCAR Rule Book. We fully expect our entire industry to adhere to that Code.
After the suspension announcement, Clements released a statement about the situation.
I apologize and regret what I said to the NASCAR writer and to NASCAR, my sponsors, my fans, and my team, Clements wrote. NASCAR has a Code of Conduct that everyone must follow and I unintentionally violated that code. I will not get into specifics of what I said, but my comment to the writer was in no way meant to be disrespectful or insensitive to anyone, or to be detrimental to NASCAR or the NASCAR Nationwide Series. I will do what I need to do in order to atone for my error in judgment.
It is officially unclear as to what Clements said to provoke the suspension. However, ESPN.com s David Newton is reporting1 that a source is claiming that it was a racial slur that prompted the suspension. If true, it would definitely jive with NASCAR s press release. The Code of Conduct officially bans anyone representing NASCAR in any way, shape or form from engaging in discriminatory actions towards others for any reason.
In their press release, NASCAR stated that Clements actions violated Sections 7-5 (the Code of Conduct) and 12-1 (The catch-all Actions Detrimental to Stock Car Racing ) in his interview.
Despite the owner/driver s suspension, Clements No. 51 is still entered for, and will start Saturday s Dollar General 200. The driver will be announced at a later time. The suspension completely overshadows an announcement the team made minutes before the suspension came down of a sponsorship from the band Hellyeah for Richmond.

The list of drivers who ve won in their 400th career start, including Sunday reads like a Who s Who of Who s Mattered within this sport. Four of them are Hall of Famers: Richard Petty, Lee Petty, David Pearson, and Dale Earnhardt, Sr. paired with the sport s most successful independent, Dave Marcis. It s a number that, however random has been connected to the very best.
No wonder why it seemed only natural the sport s five-time champion, Jimmie Johnson, would get added next, using the sport s Super Bowl to do it.
That was far from a sure thing for most of the 55th annual Great American Race, where Johnson was invisible for the first 400 miles. But in the last ten laps, he surged to the front, flying past Brad Keselowski and winning fairly comfortably, in restrictor plate terms to take his second Harley J. Earl trophy. While Dale Earnhardt, Jr. made a charge on the backstretch, pushing valiantly into second into Turn 3 he would come up short as Johnson came to the line about 0.129 seconds ahead a little more than a car length out front.
That meant a 1-2 finish for Hendrick Motorsports, the third time in Daytona history that s happened since 1989. But it was done in the most unconventional of ways, with Earnhardt never getting out front and Johnson pacing the field consistently until Lap 186.
I felt like I was sitting on something all day, he said afterwards, smiling. And was just ready to have some fun when it counted.
It also caught the rest of the field off guard. The turning point for Johnson came on Lap 178, after a caution for Jeff Burton s one-car incident bunched up the field. That handed the lead to an unlikely source, a wounded Brad Keselowski, who took the caution at the start/finish line in front despite still coming up to speed on pit road after jumping off-sequence during green-flag stops. The ensuing restart led to the best racing of the day, the No. 2 car trying to hold the outside while Johnson darted to the inside and led a spirited challenge. All race, up to that point the lower groove had fallen short, making the race a battle of track position but Keselowski s aero woes, after being involved in two wrecks let the No. 48 edge in front as the race s sixth and final caution came out for debris.
That gave him the high line on the restart, said Keselowski, who still held on to fourth. And there was nothing we could do. We weren t strong enough to hold our own there.
Without his former title rival to contend with, Johnson was on cruise control, reversing a recent trend of superspeedway disasters that connected all the way back to his initial 500 win in 2006. Last season, he wrecked or blew a motor at every plate race, producing just one top-5 finish in his last 13 Daytona starts before Sunday.
It s like playing the lottery, he said about this style of racing. Everybody s got a ticket. I ve struck out a lot at these tracks, left with torn-up race cars. Today we had a clean day.
Earnhardt, whose last-lap charge fell short, now has his third runner-up finish in the last four years at Daytona. He, along with third-place Mark Martin put together a perfect run on the inside line but, as would be the theme of too much of this 500 they stalled out before getting up to the leader s rear bumper on the inside.
We kind of run out of steam, Earnhardt said. Once we come to turn four but real happy with the way the car run all day. You couldn t pass.
Neither could anybody else. Single-file racing, indeed was the name of the game as just 19 lead changes, mostly during green-flag stops occurred during the race s first 172 laps. A long, snarling parade of cars was derived from a combination of factors, from drivers unwilling to get aggressive, fearing another wreck after Saturday s Nationwide tragedy to a simple drafting disaster with NASCAR s new Gen-6.
I didn t want to run single file, Keselowski said, But when you try to make a move and go to the bottom, you just go backwards. The only thing worse than running single file is running single file in the back of the pack.
When we re running single file, we re just trying to get to the finish, added Johnson. We ve all crashed so many times and have torn up so much stuff that a lot of that falls on the driver s shoulders.
The result was a fairly conservative 500, marred by just two multi-car incidents along with one on the final lap, involving Travis Kvapil, Marcos Ambrose and several others. Unfortunately, the two crashes that did occur involved several favorites, eliminating Kevin Harvick, Tony Stewart, and Kasey Kahne before the 100-mile mark. Others, like Kyle Busch and Matt Kenseth had motors go south, opening the door for Johnson and crew chief Chad Knaus for their offseason effort to pay off.
I m telling you, I know we worked at least 35 days straight on the car that we raced in the Daytona 500, said the crew chief, who was suspended for Johnson s other win in this race, in 2006. I know I put in personally one day of 38 hours straight. I actually sent Jimmie a text, saying I ve seen 6:48 three times today and haven t been to bed yet.
We ve got 500-plus employees at Hendrick Motorsports. When they all want to go out and win races, you put guys like Johnson behind the seat, you re going to see magic happen.
Stewart-Haas Racing s Ryan Newman wound up fifth in the race, followed by Greg Biffle. Regan Smith, Danica Patrick, Michael McDowell and J. J. Yeley rounded out the top-10 finishers. There were a total of 28 lead changes among 14 drivers, with 24 cars ending the race on the lead lap.
For Patrick, it was a record-setting day, starting from the pole as she became the first woman to lead the Daytona 500. Her end result was also the best for her gender in the Great American Race, the capper to a steady day in which she never strayed that far from the front.
She s going to make a lot of history all year long, exalted Earnhardt in his presser. It s going to be a lot of fun to watch her progress. I think she s done her best work in the Cup car myself. I think, for whatever reason, she seems to get a lot more out of that car.
While starting from the pole, Patrick was not able to lead until midway through the race. As the laps wound down, she ran as high as third in the closing stretch and made a nice recovery from adversity, having to charge through the pack after struggling to get off pit road, losing two to three spots, at least on virtually every stop during the 500.
Today, Patrick added. Being able to stay up front, get to the lead at one point, just run up in the top 10, for me that was more of an accomplishment.
The race ran with six caution flags, for 24 laps and posted an average speed of 159.250 miles an hour. The series now moves to Phoenix, next Sunday for the second race of the season.

A serious incident marred the end to Saturday s Nationwide Series race at Daytona. As the cars were coming to the checkered, leader Regan Smith was turned by Brad Keselowski and this multi-car melee ensued.2 In the aftermath, Larson s car hit Keselowski s, head-on then turned in a dangerous angle into the outside wall where the front half of his car was virtually destroyed. While the engine got stuck in the fence, several parts and pieces went through while one of Larson s tires landed nine rows up. At this time, ESPN is reporting 17 people have been taken to area hospitals, with two of them with major injuries.
Here s what I ve learned from my reporting at the track; a Cup crew member, on condition of anonymity told me two fans are in critical condition and were transported by helicopter to the hospital. A Cup Series official, on condition of anonymity reported eight to ten had been transported but that number has since gone up, based on ESPN s latest tweet.3 One fan on the ground, who had been standing and watching since the incident unfolded counted eight stretchers being used in the stands, from start to finish. However, several others told me they d seen between four and five used.

There, obviously was some intrusion into the fence. They re moving folks and taking some folks over to Halifax Medical Center. We ll be able to update you later on, but all we know is everybody is working hard on what happened.
Our thoughts and prayers are with everybody they re working on.
Update at 6:15 pm: SPEED s Wendy Venturini reports that 11 fans were admitted to Halifax Health Medical Center, a Level 2 Trauma Center located within borderline walking distance of Daytona International Speedway. Six of the 11 were admitted for trauma injuries. One fan is in critical condition at the present time. All 11 fans are considered to be in stable condition at the moment.
Update at 7:10pm Daytona International Speedway President Joie Chitwood, III and NASCAR Senior Vice President for Racing Operations Steve O Donnell said that 28 fans were treated for injuries as a result of the crash on the final lap. 14 fans were taken to hospitals, while 14 more were treated at the Infield Care Center.
Repairs are ongoing to the catchfence as of now. They will be completed in time for tomorrow s Daytona 500. The crossover gate that Kyle Larson hit will not be replaced for tomorrow. Instead, that will be replaced by straight fencing. No fans that will be sitting in the affected areas from today will be moved for tomorrow s race.
SPEED s Wendy Venturini is reporting that 12 fans were admitted to Halifax. Five were unrelated to the crash. Two fans, one a minor, are in critical condition. However, all fans there are in stable condition. Six more fans were taken to Halifax Health Port Orange, while one more was taken to Florida Hospital Memorial Medical Center, which is roughly eight miles from the track. No word of the condition of those fans.
Update 8:00pm: Tyler, the man who shot the video from the grandstands of the crash (since blocked on YouTube by NASCAR) was interviewed on SportsCenter via cell phone (He asked ESPN to withhold his last name before going on-air, which they agreed to). He stated that after the crash, he saw a fan take his shirt off and wrap it around the bleeding leg of a fellow fan. The tire that flew into the stands landed approximately ten feet from him, on top of another fan.
He went on to state that he never thought what occurred could happen, knowing the steps that NASCAR has taken in recent years in regards to safety. He also stated that it ll be a long time before I go back to a NASCAR race and sit that close. Stuff like this is just not supposed to happen.
Update 9:30pm: The AP s Jenna Fryer is reporting that both patients at Halifax Health Medical Center that were in critical condition have been stabilized. The six fans taken to Halifax Health Medical Center-Port Orange are also in stable condition. Finally, the one fan that was transported to Florida Hospital Memorial Medical Center is in good condition.
Update 5:35am: NASCAR will hold a press conference at 9:30am at Daytona International Speedway. At that point, they will make another official statement. The statement will be carried live on SPEED (interrupting NASCAR RaceDay Fueled by Sunoco) and on ESPN s SportsCenter.
Update 8:10am: Both of the fans that were in critical condition at Halifax Health Medical Center have been upgraded. Their injuries are not viewed as being life-threatening.
In regards to fence repairs, the repairs on the catchfence were completed around 2:00am this morning. The crossover gate that Kyle Larson struck is now strict fencing, as stated by Daytona International Speedway President Joie Chitwood, III in last night s press conference. There is still some dust on the track from last night that will likely be blown off before the race.
Update 10:00am: Daytona International Speedway President Joie Chitwood, III announced that the track provided the means to reunite families back at their hotels around the Central Florida region. In addition, he stated that due to HIPPA laws, he cannot comment on patient conditions. Only the hospital that the patient is at (with permission of the patient and/or their family), or the patient and/or family themselves.
Update 1:20pm: According from Halifax Health, 11 of the 13 fans sent to either Halifax Health Medical Center in Daytona Beach or the smaller hospital in Port Orange have been released. Many of those fans are back at the track today.

Michael Annett is currently being treated at the Halifax Health Medical Center in Daytona Beach, Fla. after an accident during Saturday s Nationwide Series event. He will be kept for observation.
Annett was transported to the hospital after complaining of pain in his chest and sternum. Annett was treated for bruising on his chest and underwent a CT Scan.
More information will be sent once confirmed.

Kyle Busch Breaks Through, Wins Duel #2

Jeff Gordon was speeding to an easy victory in the second Budweiser Duel. Starting from the pole, he connected with teammate Kasey Kahne and appeared to have the fastest car.
Too bad he flashed some speed in the wrong place.
During a green-flag pit stop, Gordon was penalized for being too fast entering pit road, opening the door for others and allowing Kyle Busch to assert himself up front. Busch then hooked up with teammate Matt Kenseth, giving him a blocker for Kahne and others to win his second career Budweiser Duel unchallenged. Kahne jumped up to second, with help from fellow Chevrolet driver Austin Dillon while Clint Bowyer came home in fourth place. Kenseth, who got motored by on the final lap slid back to round out the top-5 finishers.
As for the transfer spots, Mike Bliss was black-flagged for a window net down early in the race which took the No. 19 out of contention. With Bliss first in line for a DNQ without a top-15 finish in the Duels that led to many teams running a conservative race. Just 13 of the 22 cars finished on the lead lap, as there were no caution flags and just six wound up in the lead draft at the finish. Josh Wise, who was in the final transfer spot of 16th place admitted that with his team and many others down on equipment, with the Gen-6 development it was critical not to tear up any sheet metal.
The race s only incident came during green-flag stops, around Lap 40 where Ryan Newman lost control trying to enter the pits. Only suffering minimal damage, he brought the No. 39 Chevy back around but lost too much time, slumping to 21st, two laps off the pace.
Busch averaged 193.966 miles an hour for the Duel, the second-fastest average speed in the history of the qualifying races.

Harvick Takes Budweiser Duel #1 While Hamlin, Edwards, Bayne Wreck

Kevin Harvick powered through the field, just before a round of green-flag pit stops to take the first of two Budweiser Duels at Daytona. He kept Greg Biffle a car length behind heading to the checkers to win with ease. Juan Pablo Montoya, Jimmie Johnson and Kurt Busch rounded out the top-5 finishers.
Trevor Bayne, who had led the majority of the race up until that point ended up in the garage after the race s one and only wreck. Denny Hamlin, heading onto the backstretch lost control and collected Bayne, Carl Edwards, and Regan Smith to bring out a late caution that bunched up the field. Edwards and Bayne, who would have started 33rd or worse anyways will now go to the rear with backup cars.
Meanwhile, Harvick held on, pushing ahead of Biffle on the restart with four laps remaining. He then stayed out of the fray while everyone else battled behind him, flashing the speed that put him up front for 40 of 75 laps in the Sprint Unlimited. Now, he s going for a Speedweeks first: winning the Unlimited, Duels, and the Daytona 500 all in one weekend.
Pole sitter Danica Patrick, who was stout in the first few laps quickly settled into the back of the lead draft to play it safe. While choosing not to start and park, as co-owner Gene Haas suggested she generally stayed out of risky situations and came home 17th, one of the final cars on the lead lap. Martin Truex, Jr., who was solidly inside the top 10 got penalized for having no right-side window. That opened the door for Scott Speed to officially transfer in, with 15th place. Brian Keselowski, whose car was off the pace from the start ran 23rd and will be one of the two drivers to DNQ for the 500.
The top line appeared to take command throughout most of the Duel, with single-file runs dominating the competition. You put the fast car on the top, said Michael Waltrip, who finished 14th. And they ll outrun the bottom every time.
The second Duel is scheduled to start 30 minutes after the first.

What I m Watching
- Dale Earnhardt, Jr. will be starting from the rear after losing an engine during Wednesday s practice. Earnhardt also reportedly had motor issues in the last segment of Saturday night s Sprint Unlimited; so what gives? Will they play it safe or will the No. 88 work its way through the field and go for the win? Of note, it seemed like Earnhardt could make his way through this old school draft with ease when he had full power I had him marked as the second-fastest car, next to Matt Kenseth before the horsepower started going sour.
- Several teams had a noticeable amount of what crewmen called slick tape, to the point on Ryan Newman s and Matt Kenseth s cars they stuck out of the rear bumper. According to one, it s designed to grab the car behind you, making sure the bumper slides underneath instead of turning someone the wrong way. I m interested to see if there is a wreck, it s with one of the cars that have this protection on them or if it s one that s decided to minimize this addition on the rear.
- Joe Nemechek and Brian Keselowski. As always, the Duels come down to fascinating stories of these underdogs trying to make the starting lineup. Unfortunately, Keselowski has had all sorts of problems during Speedweeks and been well off the pace; should he, along with Nemechek struggle to keep up with the lead draft there s less incentive for those in front of them to race hard as only two drivers out of 45 total entries will go home. Nemechek can still make it through a provisional, but Keselowski must finish 15th or better (or 16th if Danica is ranked ahead of him) in order to make his second career 500.
- Danica, Danica, Danica. How safe will she play it? Everyone, from GoDaddy execs, to NASCAR suits up in Daytona Beach and even owner Tony Stewart are desperate to ensure she starts from the pole on Sunday. In a way, that puts more pressure on this race because a wreck or any sort of mistake ruins the momentum as, under NASCAR s rules a backup car means she starts dead last. Expect a lot of protection from Smoke, in this race and starting behind her in the No. 14 and perhaps an early parking down the stretch if things get hot and heavy. I don t blame them, either; after learning a bit, the risk of disaster in the final ten laps is just too great.
- Pick To Win: Joey Logano. In his new ride with Penske Racing, Logano was a top-5 car in the Sprint Unlimited and has plenty to prove with his second chance. In a race where some might settle in, happy with a 7th and a reasonable pit selection winning for Penske here would make a statement for Sliced Bread. He starts fifth and certainly has the speed to get it done.

Hayley Survives Late-Race Scramble To Score K&N Battle Of The Beach Victory

Most young kids that make it out of Canada in sports are doing it on ice skates. Cameron Hayley is doing it behind the wheel of a race car. The 16 year-old Hayley, from Calgary, Alberta, Canada, weaved his way through a last lap melee to score his first ever K&N series win and become the third driver of the three winners at the Battle at the Beach to lead two or fewer laps. Hayley took advantage of a mistake by Gray Gaulding coming through the final corner to be the first driver to the checkered flag. Gaulding came home second with his right front going down and trying to spin the leader before they crossed the finish line. Bryan Ortiz and Ryan Gifford wrangled third and fourth place finishes respectively for Rev Racing and NASCAR s Drive for Diversity program. Ben Kennedy completed the top five.

In a theme that was consistent throughout the three Battle at the Beach races, caution flags ruled the event. The K&N event was slowed 10 times for 58 laps by the yellow laundry. Greg Pursley had the strongest car in the field but he was taken out of the lead, after leading the first 127 laps, but an over aggressive move by Cale Conley. Conley s move wasn t the only excessively forceful pass of the night. Continuing the theme that was established by Kyle Larson on Monday night, Gray Gaulding dumped Michael Self in turn two on the final lap to take the lead but then overdrove the third corner, slid high in turn four and lost the drag race to the checkers to Hayley. Hayley only led the final lap of the event. The three winners of the feature races during the Battle at the Beach lead a combined four laps.

The K&N race started much better than the Late Model and Modified events, with only one caution in the first 42 laps. The drivers were not about to let that deter them from tearing up some fine race cars however, as the event was slowed nine times over the last 108 laps by caution. There were eight cars on the lead lap when the checkered flag flew. The action on the final lap resulted in the final finishing order being drastically different from how the drivers took the white flag. Michael Self was leading as the field passed the white flag but was unceremoniously dumped in turn two by Gaulding. Self turned sideways in the middle of the track and caused several cars to be impeded from making it back around to the finish. Pursley had rebounded from being spun for the lead and was poised to grab at least a top three finish when he ran into the side of Self after the spin. Derek Thorn had also rebounded from a spin and worked his way back to the top five before he was slowed to a sixth place finish in the scramble. The drive of the night may have belonged to Ryan Gifford. He received the Lucky Dog pass on the last caution and restarted in 12th place. In the first lap of the Green-White-Checker, he advanced his position up to the top 10 and then weaved his way through the turn two carnage to come home with a fourth place finish.

The race was loaded with drivers that very well could be around the world of stock car racing for a long time. Hayley is 16, Gaulding is 15, Ortiz and Gifford are 24 and 23 respectively. Tyler Reddick is 17 and John Hunter Nemechek is 15.

The event was slowed by 10 cautions for 58 laps. It took one hour, 22 minutes and 15 seconds. Pursley led for 127 laps, Michael Self for 27 and Cameron Hayley for one. The average speed was 45.503 mph and the margin of victory was .158 seconds.

Wednesday evening, NASCAR announced that Jeremy Clements, the owner and driver of the No. 51 Chevrolet in the Nationwide Series, has been suspended indefinitely from the Nationwide Series. This suspension is due to a violation of NASCAR s Code of Conduct that occurred on Saturday at Daytona International Speedway.
NASCAR Senior Vice President of Racing Operations Steve O Donnell was quite terse when asked about it.
During the course of an interview, Jeremy Clements made an intolerable and insensitive remark, O Donnell said. NASCAR has a Code of Conduct that s explicitly spelled out in the 2013 NASCAR Rule Book. We fully expect our entire industry to adhere to that Code.
After the suspension announcement, Clements released a statement about the situation.
I apologize and regret what I said to the NASCAR writer and to NASCAR, my sponsors, my fans, and my team, Clements wrote. NASCAR has a Code of Conduct that everyone must follow and I unintentionally violated that code. I will not get into specifics of what I said, but my comment to the writer was in no way meant to be disrespectful or insensitive to anyone, or to be detrimental to NASCAR or the NASCAR Nationwide Series. I will do what I need to do in order to atone for my error in judgment.
It is officially unclear as to what Clements said to provoke the suspension. However, ESPN.com s David Newton is reporting18 that a source is claiming that it was a racial slur that prompted the suspension. If true, it would definitely jive with NASCAR s press release. The Code of Conduct officially bans anyone representing NASCAR in any way, shape or form from engaging in discriminatory actions towards others for any reason.
In their press release, NASCAR stated that Clements actions violated Sections 7-5 (the Code of Conduct) and 12-1 (The catch-all Actions Detrimental to Stock Car Racing ) in his interview.
Despite the owner/driver s suspension, Clements No. 51 is still entered for, and will start Saturday s Dollar General 200. The driver will be announced at a later time. The suspension completely overshadows an announcement the team made minutes before the suspension came down of a sponsorship from the band Hellyeah for Richmond.

Too Much Car Technology Can Be Good For You

Thanks to modern manufacturing techniques, cars are getting lighter and, accordingly, more fuel efficient
Conversely and perversely cars are also getting heavier because of the amount of technology they now carry; and what we see on cars today is just the tip of the iceberg
It is a truth universally acknowledged that Geeks now rule the Earth and they have determined that what we need in our lives today is even more techno gadgets on our motors
It will soon be impossible to print handbooks for cars because they will be so thick that they will make War and Peace look like a convenient light read
There is even a rumour that printed material will be replaced by a Stephen Hawking recording – because he is the only one who really understands this stuff – to explain each new toy as the driver attempts to deploy it
Some of the more eye-catching examples are only two or three years away
Right now some cars will warn the driver if drowsiness is suspected because of lane drifting or similar
This is a great idea especially for long distance travellers
Technology just around the corner will wirelessly monitor the drivers heart rate and respiration by way of a clever seat
Any suspicion of sleepiness will trigger an alarm
The only worry about this is, let’s say for the sake of delicacy, other emotions
Perhaps the car will deploy a virtual bucket of cold water
It has been reported that 2015 will see the first car with gesture recognition; and you thought you already knew all the motoring gestures
Even earlier there is the possibility of voice recognition
To an extent this is already here as some of you will have already tried to give basic Bluetooth or sat-nav instructions to an automaton that appears to speak a language unknown to man
Nevertheless improvements are coming which means talking to your car will be the norm
Expect worried glances in car parks
Remember those old fashioned cigarette lighters in cars? In these healthier days they have morphed into handy 12v sockets for operating or charging stuff
Even better would be the chance to remove this old device altogether and charge gadgets wirelessly
Place your gadget in the convenient container adjacent to the driving seat and charging will begin automatically
Now that’s handy
Still under development is something that any stressed-out dad is going to thank the gods for and who will be happy to cough up any amount of option cost to get it on the car
Noise cancelling headrests! Surrounding noise will automatically generate anti-noise signals
This is the one that will make the discovery of sliced bread slide anonymously into history
Squalling kids in the back, mothers-in-law – goodness gracious, the number of reasons why all cars should have this is beyond counting
It’s true too: this high tech solution for the seeker of a quiet life does exist and is even now being perfected
There is a whole raft of new automotive technology on its way to a new car near you
All the above and much more will be available sooner than you think
There is an argument that says that cars are getting too complicated and there is merit in that; but lots of us like a bit of high-tech and will look forward to some exciting new innovations
As long as they make sense and make a contribution to safety and convenience, what’s the problem?

Yesterday I spent more time in my pod than I have ever logged in a single day. It was grueling. It was butt numbing. Not a single ship was exploded either, though one tried. Why did I numb my butt you ask? Because you just have to do some things as no one will do them for you – or they will do you for them if you catch my drift. Still confused? Our ships are flown out. We collapsed one Static and took the next to 50%. The POS is packed up and hauled away. We are gone and a For Sale sign hung on the U210.
I can hear the anguished cries of, “Why!?” vibrating through local as I sit at my current R&R spot. It’s a lovely station built just for miners. It over looks a beautiful storm planet. Here’s a picture of it. It’s quite relaxing.
I still haven’t answered the why have I? Well, you’ll just have to wait for that. However, I’ll give you a hint because I’m not a callous pirate. Perhaps this bone will mollify you while I take some much needed rest in high-sec. Fly Careful
Racin' Today Bowyer Is Proud Owner Of New Ferrari Ride

A year ago at about this time, Sprint Cup driver Clint Bowyer turned up his nose almost literally when asked if he had any interest in driving a Ferrari 458 Italia GT car for/with his then-new NASCAR team owner, Michael
Waltrip.
Nah, the Kansas native said with a shake of his head and a subtle contortion of his face, not interested.
But at some point between that day in February of 2012 and early this year, Bowyer had a change of attitude toward racing sports cars. Perhaps it was the challenge of driving in the historic Rolex 24 at Daytona International Speedway. Perhaps he just needs a new watch.
But from the sound of it, the mind-changing came as the result of ego manipulation by Waltrip and Rob Kauffman, the c0-owner of Waltrip s sports car operation.
According to Waltrip, it all went down like this: We had asked Clint if he was interested, and he said, I m not sure. I don t really think so. So I asked Denny (Hamlin) if he wanted to do it, and Denny was like, Heck, yeah, I ll do it. So I think the more Clint thought about it, the more he wanted to be a part of it. And he was like, No, I want to do it. I really want to try it.
Nothing like using a tactic that parents have been using forever.
So there was Bowyer, practicing in the Waltrip/Kauffman Ferarri during last the Roar Before the 24 practice two weeks ago. And, apparently, happy with his decision.
He had a really good time testing the car, Waltrip said.
And, a pretty impressive time. Bowyer, a very good road-racer in Cup (he won the race at Sonoma Raceway last year), knocked back some good laps in the Ferrari.
I knew he would be fast, Waltrip said. It s a fun car to drive. It does everything you ask it to do. He s used to dealing with quite the beast in a Cup car where you really have to finesse a Cup car, and the Cup car won t do everything that you could ask it to do. If you just try to mash the gas, it will spin around, or if you go into the corner too far, the thing won t stop. With the Grand-Am car and Ferrari, you can really challenge it, and the car is up for the challenge. Serves really confident that Clint would not only be fast, but he d also have fun getting up to speed in a hurry.
Bowyer s sports car schedule for 2013 will be just the Rolex 24.
Getting Bowyer into the car for that race, however, left Waltrip with a problem.
I had to call Denny and tell him Clint took his seat, Waltrip said.
The team has entered a second car in the 24 but that driver lineup is to finalized over the next week or so.
So far, the Waltrip/Kauffman collaboration has been conducted at just the GT level.
Waltrip was asked this week if he and his partner/co-driver might be interested in moving up to prototypes.
If we could get us a Toyota DP (Daytona Protogype), that would be pretty cool, Waltrip said. We d probably be interested in racing a Toyota or Lexus DP. So, yeah, we re interested in it. It would be fun to drive one of those things. They re so cool looking. Maybe Toyota or Lexus one day will want to have one that we can race and that would be something we d be interested in doing, for sure.
After Daytona, the Waltrip/Kauffman plans are still being hammered out.
When asked if a run at the World Endurance Championship is a possibility, Waltrip said, Well, I think that we re still trying to figure out exactly what our 2013 schedule looks like. Rob Kauffman, my partner in Michael Waltrip Racing and really the driving force behind AF Corse (the Ferrari team) is trying to formulate what 2013 looks like.
I know some conjunction races because Indy, and maybe the race at Watkins Glen could be a possibility. We ve talked about possibly running Austin (the F1 Circuit of the Americas site in Texas) because it s on the Saturday before we head out to Phoenix for the Cup weekend.
But my main job is being a part of theMichael Waltrip Racing Sprint Cup team. So I have to sort of make my participation in the events hinge around the schedule that NASCAR that we have in NASCAR. But Rob will probably run a couple more than me because he s a little more flexible with his schedule. But I think maybe we ll try to run a few but probably not all of them.
Stevenson Motorsport s 2013 full-season driver line up will again feature young American John Edwards and Scottish veteran Robin Liddell. The combination scored seven podium finishes and three wins in 2012.
They will be joined by fellow Team Chevrolet racers Tommy Milner and Jan Magnussen in the season-opening Rolex 24 At Daytona as the team looks to improve on last year s fourth place finish.
With a Grand-Am championship the focus for the team, Stevenson said it brings a big-picture approach to the opening round of 2013, but there is no question for the group what the best way possible to open the year would be.
It s weird, Stevenson has been a front running team ever since 2008 but we ve never actually led the championship at any point of the year, said Team Manager Mike Johnson. So that s kind of a first goal is to get to lead, and then go from there and try to maintain that lead. We ve had a lot of wins and a lot of podiums but we have also had that DNF or two that has taken us out of the championship picture. So we have to get rid of those. I ve always said that nobody ever really wins these championships everybody else just loses them. And I still think that s pretty true. The Audis and Ferraris have been strong in testing, and we were disappointed that GRAND-AM decided not to allow us to use the single-nut wheel attachment, but we will just focus on our finishes and look to keep building momentum all year long.
After consecutive runner-up finishes in the GT Challenge championship of the American Le Mans Series presented by Tequila Patr n, TRG announced a new lineup for what it hopes is a run to the 2013 title.
Ben Keating and two-time ALMS race winner Damien Faulkner will drive a Porsche 911 GT3 Cup for Kevin Buckler s team. Craig Stanton, another past ALMS race-winner in a Porsche, will join the pair at Sebring and Petit Le Mans.
Ben and Damien are going to be a lethal combo here, Buckler said, but you add in a brand-new Porsche GT3, Craig Stanton as the third driver in the long races, some of the best crew in all of GT racing, and of course, TRG; and I believe we are going to have a solid run at a championship this year! I couldn t be happier to be leading the charge for this formidable effort.
The No. 5 Action Express Racing Corvette Daytona Prototype will feature 2004 Rolex 24 Champion Christian Fittipaldi, American Brian Frisselle, Nelson Piquet Jr. and 2012 Rolex 24 podium finisher Felipe Nasr in this year s 24.
The sister No. 9 Action Express Racing Corvette DP will feature Portuguese driver Joao Barbosa, American Burt Frisselle and Mike Rockenfeller from Germany. Barbosa and Rockenfeller were both part of the team s 2010 Rolex 24 victory.
Burt Frisselle has raced with the team in the past as a guest driver and is now joining the team as a full time Action Express Racing driver in 2013.
We are really happy with this line up, said Elton Sawyer, Action Express Racing Director of Race Team Operations. Both of our Corvette DPs have drivers that not only bring a lot of speed, but also a really wide range of experience both in and out of Daytona Prototypes. The Roar test was really productive for us, and it was great for the drivers to get comfortable with the cars, and with each other. This is going to be the most competitive Rolex 24 yet, and we are looking forward to the challenge.

Analysis: Keep Driver with Packers, but in bigger role than on the …

GREEN BAY – After a year where Packers all-time leading receiver Donald Driver found his on-field role severely minimized, Driver and his team are both discerning his future.
Perhaps the Packers and Driver should keep their relationship going, but by grooming Driver for a greater role than anything he could accomplish on the field – becoming a racial groundbreaker as the top executive of the Packers whenever Mark Murphy moves on.
(Whether that’s in two years or 20 seasons – no rush for him to leave after the job he’s been doing as Packers president.)
Currently, no African-Americans hold the top leadership position on an NFL team. Of course, that top position on all the other 31 NFL franchises is the team’s majority owner.
Even with the money Driver has made in his long career in Green Bay, he probably doesn’t have the bank account to buy an NFL franchise – at least not yet.
However, the unique corporate structure of the Packers – a non-profit organization – means that the team president is the top leader, and not the majority owner.
Driver has gained incredible goodwill among both the Packers and nighttime television watchers, all because of his exploits on the field and the dance floor.
He certainly has gained a solid business sense in his time in Green Bay, and has both incredible likeability and solid leadership skill.
All those qualities, when married with business experience, are fantastic for eventually becoming the successor to Mark Murphy whenever he decides to move on.
If Driver has any desire to follow the path of a groundbreaking African-American businessman like Packers Hall of Fame defensive end Willie Davis, he could go under Murphy’s wing and learn more about the business side of the NFL.
In time – perhaps initially in a dual role as special assistant to Murphy and wide receivers co-coach – he could gain enough skills to be be the perfect person to take over for Murphy.
If the racial makeup of NFL ownership remains as it is today – something which hopefully changes soon – Driver would become the first African-American to have the top leadership position with an NFL team.
No catch, no touchdown, no block, no dance move, nor anything Driver has ever done on a dance floor would ever surpass him making that groundbreaking move and, if he’s the best man for the job, someday becoming president of the Green Bay Packers.
(Note: ESPN is reporting that the Oakland Raiders are talking with NFL executive Ray Anderson, who is African-American, about becoming the team’s first president – but not in an ownership capacity.)1
