With over 14 million people, Karachi is Pakistan s largest city.

Its crowded suburbs and slums have sprawled away from the port, but the city s main roads still radiate out from where ships arriving from the Arabian sea unload their cargoes.

At the southern end of the harbor, two spits of land curl together to enclose a protected inlet. The western spit of land holds the naval yards and the main container port; on the eastern, larger spit, there are the oil terminals and the dense settlements of Shireen Jinnah Colony and Kiamari.

From the air, both sides manifest a peculiar geometry of tightly serried rectangles with thousands of shipping containers and hundreds of parked oil tankers, many of which will eventually make the long overland journey to Afghanistan.

Gold Vanishes in Air Cargo Heist Whilst Technology Aids Enforcement

With another massive air cargo crime this week comes good news for road haulage freight truck operators as Heavy Vehicle Electronic License Plate Inc (Help), a not-for-profit public-private partnership dedicated to advancing the safety and efficiency of the transportation industry, has announced that it is to bolster its support of stolen cargo recovery efforts by delivering CargoNet theft alerts through the Automated Vehicle Identification (AVI) system, PrePass.

Firstly the story of a scheduled American Airlines flight from Guayaquil, Equador into Miami, Florida. The plane was disembarked in the early hours on Tuesday and five cargo handlers unloaded the freight carried aboard. Amongst the items was a single box containing $625,000 worth of gold. Closed circuit TV has the freight moved to the far side of the aircraft and shortly after shows a cargo tug passing the area, stopping and proceeding out of shot. The tug was found later several gates away and sworn statements from the staff on the tarmac state none know who was driving and, with the gold still missing, the FBI is appealing for information. Man killed in Isabella Township after being struck by pickup truck …

BROOMFIELD TOWNSHIP — The Isabella County Sheriff’s Department reports that a man is dead after being struck by a pickup truck last night.

The crash occurred on M-20 just west of Sherman Road just after 10 pm, according to police.

A vehicle was stopped with its hazards on and called 911 due to finding a deer lying dead in the road.

Another vehicle, driven by Jaremy Stiles, age 37 from Big Rapids, stopped behind the first vehicle to see if that driver needed assistance.

Stiles had shut off his vehicle lights when he went to check on the first driver.

While Stiles was returning to his car, a pickup truck approached, saw the deer but not the cars, and swerved to the right to avoid hitting the deer.

When the driver of the pickup truck spotted Stiles, he swerved further to his right and went into a ditch. Stiles, police say, also went into the ditch in what they believe was an attempt to avoid being hit by the pickup truck.

Instead, he ran right into the path of the pickup truck and was struck and killed.

Stiles was pronounced dead at the scene.

Uniserve wins Major Export Air Freight Contract to the Middle East …

Uniserve has announced the award of an export air freight contract of over three million kilos to seven countries in the Middle East, on behalf of Debenhams to their franchise partners Alshaya.

As part of the agreement, Uniserve will also be responsible for all sea freight movements. This prestigious export contract was highly sort after by a number of other major carriers.

How much are average truck driver salaries?

Long distance truck driver salaries start at about $15.00 per hour, while experienced truck driver salaries3 can be upwards of $21.00 per hour (this salary chart has national median salaries4). But most long-haul truck drivers don’t get paid by the hour, they get paid by the mile. There are a couple types of truck driver employment options. You can be a company driver or there are also owner operator trucking jobs5. Then there are even more options from there. With owner operator trucking jobs you can have a net-lease contract, where the company you’re driving for pays for all of your gas and oil and licensing and everything else associated with driving a truck thousands of miles… and then they pay you about $0.60 per mile. The net-lease contract is particularly nice because you no longer have to worry about the truckers cost per mile calculation, because they’re all paid by your employer.

The hours of a long distance truck driver are actually federally regulated. A truck driver can’t work more than 18 hours in a day, 10 hours of which can be driving. If you figure on averaging 65 miles per hour, you would be driving 650 miles every day. But, that’s if you were driving in your dreams. In the waking world, traffic exists. Lots of it. Traffic is the bane of a truck driver’s existence; so when you ask a trucker what their favorite state is, don’t be surprised when they say Texas. It’s big and its roads are empty.

What Else is There to Know about Owner Operator Trucking jobs? Is it really different from just being a long distance truck driver?

Doing either job requires a trucker to drink lots of coffee. A truck stop can go through 7 to 10 gallons of coffee in an 8 hour shift. If it’s in the morning, it can be even more.

Regional Freight Professionals Spur E.A.C. Trade And Industry …

A regional innovative training program for clearing agents is growing a new breed of professionals to spur trade and prosperity in East Africa , a donor- funded organization formed to speed up regional integration said on Monday.

TradeMark East Africa (TMEA) said the innovation, run by the East Africa regional freight forwarding governing body (FEAFFA), the program is quickly churning out a fresh generation of professionally trained freight forwarders to quickly expand the ever-growing potential for trade within the East African region.

Where you see trade grow, you see prosperity take root. By training the key people in the freight forwarding business, we are helping move goods quicker, save time and money and help the region develop, TMEA Silas Kanamugire said.

He said the aim is to reduce the time and cost involved in movement of goods across East Africa by raising the professional standards of clearing and forwarding agents, since they are the ones mandated to clear cargo by the EAC Customs Management Act.

The TMEA-backed FEAFFA aims to transform the job of freight clearing and forwarding into a recognized profession and to standardize and regulate this key position to streamline the process of doing business in the five-nation bloc.

Shehe Mzungu, a trainer working with the Kenya Revenue Authority at the Kenya School of Revenue Administration (KESRA), said the program has enabled the customs agent to improve on the declarations they submit to Kenya Revenue Authority which has enhanced the tax compliance levels.

This has also reduced the number of offenses committed by the customs agents, enabling them to improve on the time taken for the cargo to be cleared through Customs thus facilitating trade in the region, said Mzungu.

Trade in East Africa is increasing. Volumes of cargo destined for Rwanda , Burundi and Uganda have increased over the past eight years since the EAC Customs Union was signed in 2005. With faster clearing by the agents, it is estimated that the cargo will increase by eight trucks per day by June 2013.

With more than 40 percent of business costs accruing to transport and logistics, there is increasing appreciation of the importance of the sector in international trade. I am pleased this program will raise professional standards in the industry, said the Federation s Regional Executive Officer, John Mathenge.

Until recently, it was believed that many freight forwarding agents were involved in unethical practices in collusion with officials to avoid duties and taxes and divert transit cargo into local economies, causing governments to lose revenues.

Lack of capacity of most clearing agents, coupled with unclear procedures resulted in enormous problems to taxpayers such as corruption temptations and delays in clearance of goods, thus affecting taxpayer s profit margins, said Ntaganda Evarist, Acting Director of Rwanda Revenue Authority Training Department.

The efficient flow of international trade relies on a range of skilled service providers working together effectively, including shipping lines, port terminal operators, customs officials, operators of off-dock container yards, land transport agents, and clearing and forwarding agents.

My clients are now satisfied with the fast clearance of their goods. We are now not seen as unreliable or barriers to the trade process, but rather partners who can help grow the prosperity of this region, said Xavery Komba, CEO of Victorius Tanzania Ltd, one of the trained agents.

The reform of international trade logistics in the region, and in particular the quality of services offered by the various market actors will yield important economic gains throughout the region.

This curriculum and the training has come at a very opportune time, as a commitment to the reforms, the Revenue Authorities have decided to upgrade the customs system, Said Commissioner of Uganda Revenue Authority Richard Kamajugo.
